A long-time dream of Compassionate Chefs Cafe is well on its way to being realized and we need your help to make the final stage as amazing as it can be.

Aside from simply bringing the children of the Gandhi Ashram to the United States to perform, we also want them to know that we’re happy to see them and to feel the warmth of the audience. To that end, we would like to fill the performance space in Berkeley on May 27th to the rafters.

Ticket priced are by donation, please pay what you can afford. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Please go here to make your donation and reserve your seat.

“Ekatva” is a Sanskrit word for “oneness” or “unity.” In partnership with leading Indian performing arts school Darpana Dance Academy, EKATVA has been an inspiring journey of 16 children from the slums who present a 90-minute dance drama about Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of strength, peace and of course, oneness.

“The concept of the EKATVA tour is to share with the world the power and potential that exists in our underprivileged communities. The EKATVA children and show are examples of what happens when we provide love and opportunity to the children of our world,” says Nimesh Patel, EKATVA Director and Manav Sadhna volunteer.

But we need your help

One of the long-time dreams of Compassionate Chefs cafe has been to bring the children of the Ghandhi Ashram and the children of the Tenderloin After School Program together. Now, from May 21st to 29th, that will finally happen! We have partered with Ekatva to help bring the children here.

For the last two years, the funds we have been raising have been supporting a music program – Beat Crazy – that has been working with the children in the Tenderloin After School Program and at the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad. The children of India will be performing and touring the United States in May and will finally get to meet and perform with their friends in America. But we need your help.

Project Ahimsa has offered to donate $30,000 to the tour, but only if we can raise $30,000 by April 2. This drive has already raised $12,000. Additionally, Compassionate Chefs Cafe is donating $8,000, but we need an additional $10,000 to take advantage of this generous offer.

Please help us make this a reality. Compassionate Chefs Cafe has dedicated the last six years to helping children become global citizens of the world and nothing embodies that goal better than finally having the children across the ocean meet the children across the street.

Twice every year, New Delhi Restaurant transforms into “Compassionate Chefs Cafe”- a unique space of giving and selfless service. At this event, you won’t receive a bill for the food you eat, because it is offered to you purely as a gift, with great love. In turn, you can “pay it forward” – whatever amount you wish – offering a gift of your own will go directly towards youth enrichment programs supported by Compassionate Chefs Cafe.

Our August 2011 fundraiser was another lovely evening that brought together people from all walks to life to help raise funds for a beautiful cause. We had a representative from the Tenderloin After School program that shared information about the importance of the program and the kids it supports. We also had a young woman who actually graduated from the program and has now returned to volunteer. She talked about the encouragement and support she received while she was in the program.

There was delicious gourmet Indian food catered by New Delhi Restaurant. Henna Garden was in the house as always providing beautiful mehndi for the guests. DJ Amar was behind the decks holding down the music. Beautiful dance performances were shared by the Dholrhythms Dance Company’s student troupe called “Rhythms of Punjab” that performed Bhangra as well as a bellydance performance by Calamity Sam.

We also sold Compassionate Chef’s cafe tshirts especially designed for this event by founder Ranjan Dey’s daughter Sarah Dey. We raised almost $4000 at this fundraiser. All the funds will be allocated to the projects we currently support, Ekatava in Ahemadabad, India and The Tenderloin after school program here in San Francisco. We are very grateful to everyone that joined us and opened up their hearts and pockets to help support our projects. Our next fundraiser will be in November and we hope you’ll be able to join us again.
